Is 96k Miles Too Much for a Mustang?

Hello y’all. Long time lurker, first time poster. I’m interested in purchasing this high mileage mustang, and I would appreciate some input. It’s had one owner with limited service history, and it has ~96k miles. The dealership is wanting $23,000 before TTL. I’ll be stopping by after work today, or first thing tomorrow morning (if it’s still available then), so what are somethings you’d advise to keep an eye out for? Thanks in advance.

Maybe ask for 2k off or a 12-24 month warranty? That many miles isn’t bad, but how often are you planning to drive it?

I’m surprised no one talks about this more often. Dealership employees make a lot from warranties and they usually drop the price on them during negotiations. I’d rather buy a $23k car with a $1500 warranty for 3 years than a $33k car with no warranty and fewer miles.

@Aris
That’s great to know, thanks!

It’s going to be my daily driver.

That’s not a bad price for a premium performance package with the digital cluster. I’ve driven Mustangs with the Coyote engine for 150k+ miles and they kept going, whether it was a Mustang or a truck. It’s probably been well taken care of by the previous owner. Could be a great deal.

@Everett
Haha, sometimes you get high-mileage gems and low-mileage lemons :joy::sob:

96k miles isn’t really that high. Depends on how much you drive every year.

My '95 has around 233,000 km on it :joy: It’s funny to see people worried about 96k miles.

My '08 has 93,000 miles and it’s been perfect except for issues I caused :man_shrugging:

Seems like a solid deal if everything checks out. Have an independent mechanic take a look.

Just inspect it carefully or get a mechanic to look it over. Since it’s high mileage, it was probably used for highway commuting, which is easier on the powertrain. I’d prefer that over a car with 35-50k miles spent in stop-and-go traffic. Just know that in 10 years, if you add another 60k miles, it’ll probably be worth around $2500 :joy: Just kidding, flying cars by then!

@Meade
I think the previous owner used it for road trips. It has service records showing it’s been to Colorado, Utah, and a few other states.

Here I changed it for you ladies

PROS

  • 5.0
  • rare orange fury
  • 10 speed when healthy shifts good in S mode

CONS

  • higher miles
  • early 3rd gen timing chain tensioner issues
  • early 10 speed bugs usually fail certain miles 8k-10k to fix ford resolved 10 speed in later models
  • coyote tick early cayotes had issues with block replacements. seemed to be fixed in some 2021+ cayotes

Summary I would shop for later 2021 5.0s most bugs ironed out

Pic is my 2021 Mach 1 Tremec got rid of my old 19 GT 10speex.

You missed the joke lol. There’s a viral post where someone just says ‘I ain’t reading that essay.’

I’ve never heard of any major mechanical issues with that generation. Just change the oil every 5k miles and keep an eye on the cam phasers. Should be a fun car to drive! :slight_smile:

That’s not too many miles. If it’s been well maintained and the carfax looks good, I’d feel confident buying it.
