How reliable is the 2005-2009 Saleen S281?

I’m considering a 2005-2009 Saleen S281 and am curious about its reliability, especially with the supercharged versions. Do they need a lot of repairs? Are parts expensive? Would I need to go to a higher-end shop for maintenance?

Honestly, it’s mostly a GT with a body kit and aftermarket parts. Not super special mechanically, just a more unique Mustang.

Really? I thought the Saleen parts might have some unique issues. I’ve also heard that body parts can get pretty pricey?

@Hank
Yep, that’s basically it. Body parts can be pricey because they’re rare, but that’s what you get with limited-edition trims and models.

If it’s the supercharged version, it should hold up well, but the automatic transmission might need a rebuild down the road.

I thought the 5-speed was pretty solid in these Mustangs? Maybe I’m mistaken.

@Hank
The manual transmissions are generally reliable. It’s the automatics that can have issues, which is common for a lot of older Mustangs.

If it’s a Tremec TR3650, some of those have problems with the 2nd gear synchro. I have to shift slowly into 2nd on mine, and I’ve seen other people mention the same. Not sure how widespread it is, but mine has high miles.

@Hank
The 5R55 automatic transmission isn’t the strongest.
