Is the Mach-E reliable?

Hey everyone, I stopped by a Ford dealership in South Florida today planning to buy an F-150 Lariat. While I was there, they offered me an amazing lease deal on a Mustang Mach-E Premium instead. Since I’ve never owned an electric vehicle, I decided to hold off and do a bit more research before committing. To give myself some breathing room, I put down a $500 fully refundable deposit while I look into the vehicle’s reliability.

The lease deal they’re offering is for 36 months/12k miles per year, with $3k down and $265 per month.

For those of you who own or have experience with the Mach-E, what do you think about it? Is it a reliable choice?

Mine has been flawless. I’ve had it for a little over a year. No maintenance except a 10,000 mile checkup which was basically a tire rotation.

I’ve received all the software updates over time, including updating from Blue Cruise 1.2 to 1.3.

The app is generally good. Every now and then the phone as key doesn’t work to unlock the car until I unlock the phone and relaunch the app, but that’s about the worst trouble I’ve had.

Everyone will have different experiences but mine has been great.

@Nori
Same here… had it for 18 months. CarPlay gets a little wonky every now and then… that’s about it. Great car.

@Nori
Same. Almost 40k miles now.

@Nori
Same - except 2.5 years old. Literally only issue we’ve had is rocks on the windshield. I will say the paint seems… weak? Compared to previous cars. Chips easily.

Gotta be better than Japanese paint. I hope.

@Keaton
RZ has good paint, so far.

If it was built in North America it’ll likely use better paint than ones built in Japan (regulations). I had a Japanese built RAV4 Prime with the worst paint I’ve ever had.

@Keaton
All the RZ/BZ/Solterras have J-VINs from Motomachi. I know Lexus has had some problems with particular colors over the years.

@Nori
Exact same here with about 40,000 miles on it. It works great for what we need it for.

@Nori
Same here. We’ve had ours for almost 3 years now. I just took it in for 48,000km (30,000mi) warranty service and they found no issues. It’s never broken down on us at all. Had a parking brake fault at one point and it turned out it was a simple wire replacement. We bought the full extended warranty and everything has been $0 every time.

We’ve driven it on a long-haul trip from southwestern Ontario, Canada to Florida and back (6,000km/3700mi) during the winter with no problems to speak of. Range was reduced but improved as we drove south.

My family has two Mach E’s. We love them more than expected, even more than my brother’s Tesla Model Y (now sold).

One Mach E had a dead 12V battery in the first 6 months. It’s a common issue with many EVs. Replaced and moved on, no other issues.

My Mach E had a rear motor defect that caused a tapping noise. Took it to one of the e-certified dealers. They set me up with another Mach E loaner for 4 weeks, ran diagnostics, and replaced the whole rear motor. Back in service now. No regrets, things happen, and they handled it well.

Do you need an F-150’s capacity? If yes, the Mach E is solid but may not handle what that truck can.

Also, can you charge at home? If not, I wouldn’t recommend an electric car.

@Fern
I can charge at home. I’d just need to install a charger in my garage.

Had a Volt for 4 years prior to the Mach E. We’ve done fine charging on standard 120, even in Minnesota. But we rarely drive more than 30 miles a day.

@Howard
That amazes me. I’m also in Minnesota but lived on 120 for the first six months with my Mach E. It was… stressful.

Same in Upstate NY. I can survive on 120v, but if I drive a lot it couldn’t keep up, and I needed to supplement with a fast charger, which is a 30-minute one-way trip for me and near zero places I visit regularly.

I have a NEMA 14-50 available now and it charges overnight.

@Fern
I’d like to second loving this car more than I expected. I had a Ford Fusion before this and disliked it early on. I’m a year into having my Mach E and have only minor tweaks I’d like to see (one of which – heat pump – they added to the 2025 model).

Love mine after 15k miles. No real maintenance to speak of. Biggest issue was some warning about lane assist and brake assist sensors but I think that was due to icing… cleared up on its own when I parked it in the garage.

You’ll feel range anxiety if you haven’t owned an EV before. The range fluctuates based on many factors (the biggest being cold weather).

You should be able to install a level 2 charger at home. The fast commercial chargers will have you sitting there for 45 minutes. Would never recommend an EV if you can’t install a charger. The charger that comes with it is dreadfully slow, adding only 3 miles per hour.

@Thames
I bought mine with every intention of installing a level 2 charger at home. 1.5 years later, I haven’t gotten around to it because I found level 1 more than enough, unless I need to hit a fast charger. It really depends on how much you drive.

Also, ice and road grime will block those sensors in any car with similar features.

A couple of questions from someone with both a Mach E and an F-150 Lightning:

  1. You went in looking for a full-size pickup and are considering an “SUV” that is car-sized. Why did you want a pickup, and did you consider an F-150 Lightning too?

  2. Do you have a place to install or access a Level 2 (240v) AC charger? If relying on DC fast chargers, you may spend more time (and possibly more $$) just to drive an EV.

Not trying to dissuade you, but your use case is important. Don’t lock yourself into something just for the payment.
