3V owners, how does it stack up against today’s muscle cars?

My 3V is cammed, tuned, and has a valved full exhaust. I know it’s slower than the 5.0s, but it’s such a fun, engaging ride that I’m not sure I want to upgrade yet.

I’m thinking I’ll just keep driving it until it’s done, but I’m curious—how different is the experience going from a 3V to a newer Coyote or any other modern platform? Anyone who’s made the switch care to share their thoughts?

There’s always something faster. If you love the car, stick with it.

True, appreciate it!

Just slap some 4.10s on it so you can keep up in 2nd gear, then let off after claiming victory (before 3rd gear hits). That’s my 97 Cobra strategy. :laughing:

@Monroe
I’ve debated between 3.73 and 4.10 all year. You might have me convinced to go 4.10 :joy:

If you’re going for 4.10, consider adding a Detroit Locker while you’re in there. They give true 50/50 torque delivery under throttle and totally change the car’s feel. I have one in my '84 Bronco, and it’s a game changer!

Well said!

That’s a gorgeous car. The S197 has a timeless look, almost like first-gen fastbacks or E30 BMWs.

Thank you! I’m always admiring how good it looks.

Agreed. One of the best-looking generations.

Totally agree—my 2014 GT gets more compliments each year. They’re becoming more rare, too.

@Stevie
Those taillights are iconic! The 2013 Mustang taillights and the 2006 Audi R8 headlights are some of the best designs I’ve seen.

The S197 is a future classic, no doubt about it! :us::+1:

The more you compare, the less happy you’ll be. Enjoy what you’ve got!

The S197 just has that classic muscle car feel. It’s all about the engine, the stick shift, and the wheel.

Exactly! The S197 has that retro look with a modern touch but without too many electronics. Just a beautiful car.

This is why I love the late 90s Vipers—no-nonsense power, just raw and wild. Still on my list to own, along with an S197 GT500.

@David
I’ve had both a 97 GTS Viper and an S197 GT500! The Viper was wild, almost too much power. The GT500’s supercharger was a blast, but that stiff clutch was a killer. Stock is the way to go, for sure.

My friend has a supercharged S197. He calls the S550 with IRS a sports car, while his Mustang is more like a 500hp beast that’s pure muscle.

@Avi
Totally, it’s a different vibe for sure.
